Clinicals and Externs

Often students ask "What is the difference between clinicals and externs?"
We as instructors refer to clinicals as the time spent in the professional areas outside the school where students get to practice their skills learned and observe professionals perform duties discussed during theory. These include but not limited to phlebotomy, cardiopulmonary, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy, health department and others. Our students spend approximately 120 hours in these areas

Externship, now called practicum, is the period spent at a physician's office, approximately 200 hours, doing exactly what a Medical Assistant does. They  are supervised by office/clinic personnel that provide guidance through daily duties and responsibilities. This is a valuable experience for students that are just starting out in the field. This is also a great employment opportunity. Many of our students get hired at their extern sites

Projected Medical Assistant increase in jobs is 60%
